In addition the History Channel offers a summary, How the Dust Bowl Made Americans Refugees in Their Own Country. ![]() ![]() The Capitol Museum of California has a brief summary in photos and words of the history of the Dust Bowl migration. I recommend reading the book before the guide. Note that this guide, like all of the guides, may contain spoilers. However I did appreciate the female point-of-view and from an historical perspective there are many parallels between the 1930s and today to discuss, from an economic chasm between the rich and the poor to a push for unionization. For a novel on the dust bowl migration to California I would reach for the Grapes of Wrath. They were very one-dimensional and as every possible horrendous event befell them, each event was told (yup told, not shown) in far-too-short descriptions without any reflection on the encounters. ![]() In addition, I felt like the characters didn’t feel real. Partially I am not a fan of a flowery writing style. While I didn’t find this book compelling as so many other readers did, there is still much to discuss after reading The Four Winds. ![]()
